A BIT ABOUT
THE PROJECT

A moment that just happened in and amongst the chaos of the F1.

This wasn't on the schedule, not my schedule anyway. I was at Red Bull hospitality for the British GP when Arvid Lindblad, VCARB's British teenage driver, unveiled a one-off helmet for his home race at Silverstone. Designed with helmet artist Navinder Nangla, it was covered in hand-drawn racing figures, karts, checkered flags and a nod to both his British and Swedish roots.

No brief, no plan, just right place, right time and a camera already in hand when it happened.

Lindblad went on to score points that weekend, helping the team to a joint-season-best result. So the photos ended up being more than just a nice moment. They were a small part of the story of his home race actually going well.

Not every shot comes together first time though. One frame from the day needed fixing in post to work at all, which is exactly the kind of thing this job is really about. It's not always about being in the right place. Sometimes it's making sure what you captured actually holds up afterwards.

That's the honest version of event photography. Some of it is being ready for a moment you didn't know was coming. The rest is making sure it looks as good after the fact as it felt in person.
